FIRST AND SECOND YEAR BASKETBALL

This year was the First Year in a number of years that St. Aidan's entered teams in the Dublin schools basketball competitions. Mr Groarke took the first years and Mr McCafferty took the Second Year team.

Unfortunately the Second Year team narrowly failed to make the Plate play-offs. However they showed enough promise to suggest that entering the U16 team in next years' competitions could be a fruitful exercise. All members of this panel showed great enthusiasm for the game and this was reflected in the high numbers who attended training sessions from December till February. All players on this panel were new to the game of basketball (except the excellent Colin Daly). It must be noted that all players improved their own game significantly during the season and this is true especially in the case of Carl O'Hanlon, Stephen Brown and Gavin Farrell.

The First Year team went one better than the Second Years by qualifying for the Plate play-offs, much to the satisfaction of their coach, Mr Graorke (new to extra-curricular activity in St. Aidan's). Again this team showed a great enthusiasm for the game. Players like Conor Houlihan and Manus Shorthall, who are involved with clubs outside of the school, were the star performers in this squad. But the potential shown by the other lads on the panel augers well for the future. The First Year team finished off the season on a high note by defeating Oatland's College in the Plate Final in the first week of March.
