ATHLETICS - THE HIGH KINGS OF LEINSTER (Feb '05)

U15 Athletics Captain and Vice-Captain Some people have described them as 'the best team in the country', one daily newspaper has described them as 'the dream-team', but we prefer to call them the St. Aidan's under 15 cross-country team. So far this year they have won The Drogheda invitation, the D.C.U. invitation, the All-Ireland C.B.S. championship and the North-Leinster open. However, the best performance of the year was saved for the Leinster championship.

The event took place on the D.C.U. sports-grounds, on February 9th last. The conditions were far from perfect, but this did not faze these iron men. The plan was to stretch the field as early as possible and the team did this to perfection. Mark McDonald came home in 2nd place, followed by team captain Eoin McDonnell in 5th and Colm Murray in 9th. Tony Kavanagh, David Lyons, Larry Brady, Gavin Redmond and Paul Sheerin all finished just outside the top 10. The team finished first, over fifty points clear of the second team. The victory was made even more sweet as coach Alan O' Neill captained the last St. Aidan's under 15 winning team back in 1994.

This victory was the direct result of over 5 months hard training, numerous sacrifices and pure determination. The lads will need to draw on all these factors if they are to be crowned All-Ireland champions, and judging by the work-rate so far, this might just come true.

Congratulations to our under 14 team. After being crowned North-Leinster champions they finished fourth overall in the Leinster championships. This was a fantastic achievement for Jordan Logue, Thomas McCamck, Andrew O' Hanlon, Ronan Bergin, Stephen O' Rourke, Aidan McDonnell, Paul Downes and Mark Jesson.
