High Achievers

Congratulations to Oisin Creaner (leaving Cert. 2002) who was recently awarded a Bursary by Trinity College Dublin, where he has been studying Mathematics, to the NASA Space Centre in Florida to study Astro Physics.

A congratulation also goes to John Donlan (Leaving Cert. 2001) who recently graduated from Trinity College with a First Class Honours degree in Mathematics and Physics.

Recent Visitor

Seamus McCabe (Leaving Cert. 1989) returned to St. Aidan's on a recent holiday break in Dublin. Seamus was ordained in Rome and has been working with the Legionaries of Christ in Mexico City. Fr. Seamus does great work with youth and the poor and we wish him continued success with his vital work.

Seamus was hugely impressed with the new St. Aidan's and spoke about his fond memories of time spent with us as a student.

1st Year Race

Our first year athletes had their first trial recently and it turned out to be a very competitive race. Kevin Reilly, Aaron Stapleton and Bobby Dennan filled the first three places and Mr. O'Neill ensured that all enjoyed this event with prizes galore.

Cap That

Well done to all the students that participated in the plastic bottle caps collection in the school. The school was working with the "Bring Centre" on Collin's Ave. and larnroid Eireann. The caps were donated to a school in Kilroan, Whitehead, Co. Antrim. When the caps were weighed, three wheel-chairs were acquired by the school.

Goodbye and Good Luck

Ms. Corina Doherty and Mr. David Me. Cague have both moved on to new pastures. We wish them well in their "new" schools and thank them for all of their work here in St. Aidan's.

3 Gold Medals

Congratulations to Mark Mac Donald, Owen Mac Donald and Luke Sweetman on their recent All-Ireland success. The three St. Aidan's students crowned an incredible year of success for the St. Aidan's Athletes. Owen won the 1500 meters (U 15's), Mark won the 800 metres (U 15's) and Luke won the long jump title. These victories followed on from previous success at Leinster level and All-Ireland success in cross-country. St. Aidan's has returned to the forefront of Irish schools athletics. Huge credit must go to Mr. Alan O'Neill who follows in the great tradition of athletics long established in St. Aidan's by Mr. Peter McDermot.

A Recess in Recess

On Wednesday 9th the two transition year classes left on the customary trip to Recess, Co. Galway. Predominantly the trip provides an opportunity for the students to get to know each other and effectively bond in preparation for the school year. The trip was quite successful in that regard as teamwork and good communication were the foundations of the tasks and activities carried out at the adventure centre, whether it is relying on someone to hold your kayak steady while you walk across it or successfully completing the orienteering course.

The group left Dublin on Wednesday, 9th September at 1.30, stopped at Supermacs on the way and arrived at the centre shortly after seven where they were greeted by a nice warm fire. We were then introduced to the leaders and nine rules of the camp, the most important of which was to enjoy yourself. Shortly after settling in we left for an evening walk through the forest. Even with rumours of killer badgers that could smell fear and stories of previous mutational injuries told by the leaders spirits remained high. The same night half of the group went out bivouacking, camping out in the forest, looking up at the stars and getting in touch with nature's tranquillity.

Over the two days activities such as kayaking, hill walking, rock climbing and orienteering were undertaken. Also table tennis, a pool competition and a table quiz kept people busy in between.

Evidently the food was liked as people went up for seconds and even thirds. We were also lucky enough with the weather, as it didn't seem to rain much while we were doing events, only when we were inside.

The group returned on Saturday 12th in the afternoon. Special thanks must go to Mr. Duffy for organizing the whole event and to the supervising teachers Ms. McGrath and Mr. O Neill for making it all the more enjoyable. All the students are appreciative of their efforts.
