Best of luck to students sitting the State Exams which commence on Wednesday, June 4th. It is down to last minute fine tuning at this stage. Once the first day is over you will be well into your stride. Expect the odd problem to arise, this is normal. Keep calm for fresh start with the next subject. You will need the same equanimity on results days in August. Don't panic if you don't get the required points for your first choice. Advice will be available in the school and elsewhere.

For the main body of students, enjoy the summer holidays and come back refreshed in late August. Occupy yourself in sporting activities or hobbies. For 5th and 6th year students a part-time job would be a good experience. Be safe, be a good citizen and be prepared for a good start for your return to school.

Mr. T. P. Ward
Deputy Principal.

Debating News

Senior debaters may have reached pole positions in a variety of national competitions and dominated the school's awards night but at the end of the year it has been the junior teams who have been pre-eminent. Much credit here goes to the transition year students of Mercy Beaumont who organised the Dublin 9 first and second year debating competition. This afforded our junior stars a chance to shine. First years Erik FitzGerald,

Jonathan Rock, Daniel O? Connor and Andrew O'Flaherty spoke alongside second years Lee Elliot, Robert Keenan and Damon Foster. Between the two teams St Aidan's were able to win three out of four preliminary debates meaning that O'Connor, Elliot and Keenan were in the grand final to debate for first place, speaking on a motion relating to co-educational schools. Coached by debating veteran, fifth year Karl Elliot who was aided by

Mr. Deneher and Mr. O'Connor, the students gave speeches that charmed, persuaded and interested the audience. Unfortunately the panel of judges were less convinced and pave the winning prize to Dominicans. However, between the junior students who spoke in this competition as well as the AIB Phil Speaks in Trinity, debating in this school is guaranteed an commanding presence with no real rivals this side of the Liffey!
