Track and Field, Tullamore first, and then the Olympics!
Season winds down, but athletes speed up!
After a long, grueling cross-country season, it was time to take to the track. 20 athletes
progressed through the North-Leinster championships and on to the Leinster finals.
On the field, Conor Weir finished second in the shot-putt, and Mark Jesson finished just
behind Conor in 4th place. Our 4x100m team, comprising of Mark McDonald, Eoin McDonnell,
Gavin Redmond and Andrew Munnelly finished 2nd and secured a place in the All-Ireland Finals.
An outstanding run from Athlete of the Year, Colm Murray, who finished first in the 3,000m,
ensured his place at the start line in Tullamore, on June 2nd. Paul Sheerin and Larry Brady
tackled the Steeplechase and finished 4th and 2nd respectively.
Eoin McDonnell cruised to victory in the 1,500m. He is in the best shape of his life and
went on to secure the Junior Olympic qualifying standard with the Irish milers club in the
800m. The Olympics take place in Belgrade in July. He will be aiming to crack the 1,500m
standard in the All-Ireland finals. Mark McDonald cruised to victory in the 800m and was .2
of a second off the Youth Olympic Standard. We wish him all the best as he aims to secure
the standard in the All-Ireland finals. Best of luck to all the athletes heading for the
All-Irelands and good luck to Tony Kavanagh and Colm Murray as they prepare for the World
Mountain Running Championships in Turin, Italy.
