The Senior Hurling Team had a very successful campaign this year, ending up being defeated by
the small margin of two points in the Dublin Colleges Final by Colmcille’s C.S. Much credit has
to go to the panel for the courage, commitment and heart they showed and produced in all of their
matches. Anything that was asked of the panel, they gave, training three evenings a week after
school. Placed in a group of four and with the winners of the group advancing straight to the final
there was extra incentive for the team. In the first two matches St. Aidans defeated Castleknock
C.S and St. Paul’s College respectively. In the final group game they came up against St. David’s
CBS with the winner guaranteed a place in the final. With David O’Sullivan (broken collar bone in
the previous game) and Niall O’Donnell out due to injury the team were really up against it. However
true to form this group stood up to the challenge and displayed some very unique and rare qualities
that will stand to them in future years on whatever path they take in future years.Words |
cannot describe the level on intensity, commitment and discipline that the panel showed in this
final group game, and at the final whistle St. Aidans had got the result that their performance
deserved by a winning margin of six points. In the final played at O’Toole Park,Aidans were very slow
to get out of the starting blocks and trailed by five points at half time. However in the second half
the team showed why exactly they were in the final, with no player giving less than 100%. One minute
into injury time the sides were level, but Colmcille’s finished the strongest to clinch victory.
Unfortunate to lose this was still a successful year for this panel. While individuals did stand out
during the championship this panel was built more on teamwork than any one individual, with each and
every member of the panel paying an important contribution during the year. A special mention must go
however to team captain Conor O’Neill who was an inspiration to all concerned both on and off the
field.
