Caught at the finishing line
For the under 16 hurlers of St.Aidan’s C.B.S, 2007 will be a year that
they will never forget. The team comprehensively defeated Ardscoil Ris
to qualify for the Dublin Junior B Championship Final. We entered the
final against St. Benildas as massive underdogs. We started very well
and led at half-time by 7 points to3, following some excellent play from
Carl O’Connor and Fintan Murphy. St. Benildas came at us in the second
half with wave after wave of attack. With minutes remaining, and Aidan’s
holding a 4 point advantage, the referee awarded Benildas a 21metre free.
The defence stopped the shot and a 15 man goal mouth scramble ensued.
The ref awarded a goal. The ref then blew up for full time and the
Aidan’s faithful went into raptures. However the ref declared the game a
draw and ordered extra time. St. Benildas took control in the latter
stages of extra time outscoring us 5 points to 1. All credit must go to
the lads as they put in an unbelievable effort (even training over the
mid-term). A special word of thanks must go to Mr. Moore and Mr. Carmody
for all their efforts over the year.

The senior hurlers also had their hopes dashed in the senior B quarter-
final against Clonkeen College. The boys gave huge commitment to the
cause and were very unlucky not to progress. The Hurler of the Year will
be highly anticipated this year...

Congratulations to John Kelly, Eoin Bridgeman and Sean Kenna. The three
Irish international water-polo players and members of St. Aidan’s double
All-Ireland champions were recently selected for the Leinster Schools
senior team. Well done guys and stay above water!

Gaelic Football Update
Joey Fitzgibbon climbs into the sky for the under 14 footballers The under 14’s
had an unlucky run in this year’s competition. Tough games way to Ardscoil Ris
and St. Fintan’s took its toll and injuries piled up. Led by Ronan Noonan they
gave it their all but fell short of a semi-final spot. A brighter note is that
first years Aaron Jesson, Joseph Fitzgibbon and Peter O’ Reilly will add great
strength and depth to the first year team after Christmas.
Our under 16 team got off to a great start with a decisive over local rivals
Ard Scoil Ris. This was followed up with a tough game away to St. David’s, and
although the team played well, David’s emerged as the victors. This set up a
crucial clash with St. Fintan’s, Sutton, and the team produced an incredible
performance to claim semi-final spot. Hopefully our experienced players like the
captain Conor Weir, Conor O’ Neill, James Connolly and Fintan Murphy can lead
the team into the finals.
Training for the senior footballers started just before Halloween in
anticipation for our first round opener against Col. Eanna. The boys put up an
excellent first half performance against one of the championship favourites and
were unfortunate to find themselves 2 points down at the break. However, we did
not fare so well in the second period and we were outclassed by the Ballyboden
men.
The boys could easily have been broken by this defeat but instead trained
harder the following week in preparation for the next round against Chanel
College. Their hard work was rewarded with an excellent victory. This victory
sets up a mouth-watering local derby against Ard Scoil Ris before the Christmas
break.
