![]() St. Aidan’s Missionary ProjectPáisti Sraide na hAfraice TheasOnce again the students of St. Aidan’s have expressed their Christianity in a practical and generous way. In early October, on a Friday afternoon, they took part in an organised sponsored walk and in a sponsored silence. They raised, through the generosity of their parents and friends, the magnificent sum of ?5,750. Every cent of this money is transferred to the bank account of the Christian Brothers in South Africa, from the Bank of Ireland in Whitehall. There are no expenses or middle-men involved. The street-kids are deeply grateful to all their friends in St.Aidan’s. Mr. Frank Welsh, who is involved with the street-kids, expresses his sincere gratitude to all the students who contributed in any way and to the members of staff who so kindly gave of their time and money. A special word of thanks is due to the Principal, Mr. J Reynolds, and to Ms. S.Walsh, an organiser par excellence of the teaching staff. It is heartening to know that spirit and ethos of Blessed Edmund Rice continues to flourish in St. Aidan’s. Mr. F. Welsh |

Debating in St Aidan’s C.B.SDebating and Public Speaking are continuing to play a huge role in developing the persuasive and discursive skills of students of all years in the school. Public Speaking in particular is enjoying a very high profile with all junior years being able to partake in in-house competitions. Senan O’Sullivan won the first year event, the second year contest was won by Cormac Ryan, whereas the third year competition will start in the new year. In the Denny Leinster School’s competition the school has been ably represented by senior students including Karl Elliott, Ciarán Tuohy, Craig O’Hare, Paul Carroll, Ben Griffin and Anthony Madden. The ‘Denny’s are perhaps the most difficult of the competitions with many rounds with tough adversaries from all over the province. So far the school has managed to get a highly commendable three out of six students through to the next level. Karl Elliott, speaking on size zero models made it through as an individual whereas as Ben Griffin and Anthony Madden won as a team in a exciting and contentious debate on the wearing of the Poppy. Madden, inflamed passions in his speech in manner that rebel Scottish MP George Galloway could admire, faced not only an angry opposing side but also held his own against the audience! In other debating fora our students gained valuable experience in the UCD ‘Mace’ competition in October, although no student gained a place in the final it will serve to prepare what is expected to be our largest representation yet at the Trinity Phil’s competition in the new year where the school has had much success in the past two years. Also to look forward to in December will be the performance of our sixth years Anthony Madden, Eóin Ó Liatháin and Andrew Linn in the Mental Health Ireland Public Speaking competition. The ability to speak in front of large numbers of one’s peers and persuade others is a valuable life skill that will benefit our students in any number of situations throughout their lives and careers and the taking part in competitions can open a students eyes to a vital part of university life. Many thanks to all involved from Mr. O’Connor, Mr. Carmody, Mr. Deneher and Miss Dunne - who incidentally will be joined by Ms.Thompson and Mr.Humphries in a staff debate that promises to be all a good debate should be! Mr. T. O'Connor |
