Art News
The 6th year students recently had a very enjoyable trip to the National art Gallery.
They also popped in to the National Art museum. In the Gallery they had an interesting
and informative guided tour around the Renaissance collection and ended with a summary
of Contemporary Irish Artists. For many of us, our favourite part was the Caravaggio
painting, 'The Taking of Christ', which was truly breathtaking. As well as being a vital
part of the Art History course, it was agreed that the trip was an inspiration to us for
our own practical classes. Some of us were lucky enough to bump into a childhood hero,
Don Conroy in the museum cafe!
After lunch we visited the National History Museum beside the Dail in Kildare St. We
viewed many of the impressive examples of early Irish metalwork. It was interesting to
see artefacts such as theArdagh Chalice and theTara Brooch. We also had a chance to view
a Viking longship and Bog Bodies. These were deemed by the students to be the most
interesting part of the trip! A great day was had by all!
Good luck to the three 6th year students who recently submitted portfolios of work to
Art and Photography Colleges. They were Aaron Kennedy, Stephen McGuire and David Doherty.
Well done on your commitment and best of luck with your application
Best of luck to students who entered paintings in this year's prestigious 'Texaco
Children's Art Competition'. Belated congratulations to Stephen McGuire who won a special
Merit Award at last year's competition.

Debating
There's never a dull moment for those students of St Aidan's whose interests lie in
debating. No sooner than the All-Irelands (where three students had reached the semi
finals) had wound up than the AIB Phil Speaks began again in Trinity College, Karl
Elliott, Anthony Madden and Ben Griffin, fresh from the previous battle were joined by
veterans Andrew Linn and Eoin O Liathain and newcomers Darren Maher, Gavin Geraghty,
Robert Keenan and Damon Foster. They were accompanied by a number of substitutes who both
supported and had the opportunity to add their own voices in the hallowed halls of the
Philosophical Society. After a very tough competition in which there were only six places
available, a very respectable two slots for Andrew and Karl who will competing in the semi
finals. Should they be successful in reaching the final they will be competing for a trip
to Hong Kong.
Debating and public speaking offer our students opportunities in a wide variety of areas.
Whether it's to get to know students in other schools, to gain an insight into life in
college or to gain confidence in one's opinions alongside the skills to express them,
debating can be an attractive outlet to many students.

Four Leaving Certificate students took part in the Senior French quiz organised by the
French Teachers Association, which took place on 30th January in Firhouse College. The
quiz is an annual event which is growing in popularity every year. Well done to Colm
Scott-Byrne, Kevin Reilly, Anthony Madden and Eoin O' Liathain who represented St. Aidan's
on the night and came a respectable 11th place overall.

first draft of the play when he was seventeen. Fifth Years attended Second Age's production
