Sports Review

This year will go down in history as being one of, if not, the most successful year for sporting teams in St. Aidan's. Our successes surpassed even the highest standards expected from the athletes in our school.

On the gaelic fields, we captured the Senior Hurtling Title and the U-16 Football Title. Meanwhile, our first year indoor hurling team captured the Dublin title in early March. Furthermore, our U-14 hurlers have qualified for the Dublin semi-finals and the first year footballers await their opponents in the Dublin quarter finals. In cross-country, the U-15 team has a remarkable achievement in winning the All-Ireland Cross-Country with Mark McDonald finishing 2nd place overall. Our UI8 table tennis teams won the Leinster League and Cup double.

The first year basketballers were narrowly beaten in the Dublin final and went on to represent the school in the All-lrelands. In the recent North Leinster Athletic Championships the school had many individual and team triumphs and hopefully these successes will lead to further glory in the Leinster and All-Ireland championships in May.

Remarkable achievements indeed and great credit must go to all the students involved for their hard work in pursuit of excellence. However, none of this would be possible if it were not for the unselfish extra-curricular work of the teachers involved and thus, a big thanks and well done to all involved.

Mr. McCafferty

St. Aidan's Share First Position in the Students Investment Challenge

In the National Student Investment Challenge (sponsored by Independent Newspapers and Setanta Asset Management Ltd.), St Aidan's ended up sharing first position with two other schools. Our team members Declan McKeown, Conor McManus, Shane O'Neill and Gerard Taylor can be immensely proud of themselves having recorded a gain of 54.7%.The judges remarked that the odds of three schools ending up with the same results were massive and unluckily our team lost out in a tie-break.

Shane O'Neill won the individual competition with a capital gain of 54.75% - a fantastic achievement. Special congratulations to Mr. Aidan Lynch for organising the project and for all his help and encouragement. The prize giving ceremony took place in Croke Park on 12th April.

The Best of the Best

St. Aidan's capture All-Ireland Cross-country Title

The date was March 5th and 11 Clonliffe Harriers men were in action. One of them strode to gold at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid, while the other ten strolled to victory at the All-Ireland Colleges Cross-Country Championships in Co. Waterford.

The team had trained almost every day for six months and they were ready for the challenge. The team consisted of Eoin McDonnel (C), Colm Murray (V.C.), Mark McDonald, Tony Kavanagh, Larry Brady, Gavin Redmond, Paul Sheerin, David Lyons, Anthony Rooney and David Murphy. It was quite simply, a stunning performance. St. Aidan's were awarded the Bro. Clarke Memorial trophy for having the best score in

Ireland on the day. This was the icing on the cake, as Bro. Clarke started the running tradition in St. Aidan's many years ago. Just when we thought the day could not get any better, Eoin McDonnell and Mark McDonald were awarded places on the Irish International team, and they will represent Ireland/St. Aidan's in Wales in April.

This may have been the end of the season, but it's just the start of some incredibly promising running careers. These young men have achieved true greatness and in the process, they have elevated St.Aidan's to the position of the number one running school in Ireland. Bro. Clarke would be proud of them all!
