PAST-PUPIL WINS DCU GOLD MEDAL FOR SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT

Former Aidan's student Eoin Sheridan awarded DCU Gold Medal for excellence in Chemistry

Eoin Sheridan BSc. Eoin attended St. Aidan's from 1996 to 2001. He studied Chemistry and Biology for the Leaving Cert. and went straight into DCU to pursue his third level studies. Eoin took the Common Entry into Science course and graduated top of his class in 2005 with an honours degree in Analytical Science. Eoin was awarded a Gold Medal for this notable achievement by DCU. He also received the Graduate Award for Chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry in Ireland.

Eoin is currently working towards a PhD at the National Centre for Sensor Research in DCU. This is how Paul describes his research work - it involves "researching new, state of the art diagnostic sensors for diseases such as cancer and diabetes using electrochemistry and spectroscopy. My work is mainly chemistry based and involves preparation of conducting substrates modified with nanometre sized gold particles that have useful properties due to their extremely small size."

Among Paul's colleagues in DCU are former classmates Aaron Cameron and Paul Cullen - all worthy role models for Science students in St. Aidan's C.B.S. Eoin's success and indeed the success of many St. Aidan's students at third level shows the depth of academic talent which exists within a school renowned for it's sporting prowess.
