5 EAST RAISE OVER €1000 FOR THE PETER MCVERRY TRUST

St. Aidan's 5 East raised €1080.05 before the Christmas break to give to the Peter McVerry Trust. The money will go towards programmes to help young homeless boys. Peter McVerry visited St. Aidan's on January 24th to speak to a group of fifth year boys. Peter McVerry talked of the boys he has helped and many of the stories he told will remain with us for a long time. Some impressions of the time he spent with us are shared in the following experiences of the boys who were there.

"The most interesting thing about Peter McVerry in my eyes is that he seems like a real average person and that he is modest about his work. I also think that he is a pillar of society because without him some children's lives would crumbles. He is their sheppard."

"I found the stories that Peter McVerry told us about the homeless people very interesting. I was surprised to hear stories of people who were urgently in need of professional help refused and delayed help."

"One thing I found interesting and worth hearing from Peter McVerry was that homeless people were just normal people but they were forced into being homeless because of family problems. The young people he talked about were more likely to quit school early and just give up on everything important."

"After hearing about the problems of homelessness I felt the government do not give enough money to Trust Funds like Peter McVerry's. Listening to Peter McVerry's experiences made me think a lot more about homeless people as stories like Peter talked about do not normally enter our everyday experiences."

"The most interesting thing I found out from listening to the stories from Peter McVerry's experiences was how it revealed a lot of suffering happening in people's everyday lives and it seems to be hidden from the society we live in. I feel strongly that we have not done enough to help the unfortunate people in our society and that we must improve our efforts to help and support homeless and charitable organisations."

"I was left with the impression that the number of children Peter McVerry helped was the same as the number of people he knew of lost to drugs, gunshots, prison."

"I found all of his stories interesting. He made us understand what he does and what the money we raised will be spent on."
